Growing up I was very much a media orientated child and was technologically minded having always had quite a large interest in computing. This interest began when we got our first PC at home and grew when we eventually got the internet.
I had gone through school not knowing what I wanted to be and ended up going on a Mechanical Engineering course at Barnsley College at the last minute. I didn’t enjoy it and so settled for a job at Morrisons instead. Eventually, I decided to go back to college to do a First Diploma Media course and although I enjoyed it, I was only there for a short period of time, as I ended up having to move out of my mums and was faced with money problems as a result.
Some time passed and I was at a stage where I was fed up with what I was doing and felt that I had lost my direction in life, what little direction I had anyway. This lead to the decision to go back on the First Diploma Media course some time later and I had made arrangements to move back to my mum’s to make things easier. I enjoyed the course, made a lot of friends and worked hard gaining a Distinction * by the end of it. I finally found what it was I wanted to do with my life, so I took the next step and enrolled on an FdSc Multimedia course at University Centre Barnsley (UCB).
I enjoyed some aspects of the course but found that it was too varied, I was not getting enough skills in particular subjects and felt that my view of the future was becoming clouded. Trouble hit in the family with both my Mum and Granddad being in the hospital and things weren’t going too well on the course either, with our course coordinator being off sick for most of the year. This led to me being unable to finish the second year. I was unsure whether I could go back and felt I had lost my direction again, until I decided to look for other options, I was not giving up.
I did a Google search looking for any kind of Web Design course anywhere, and by chance I found the FdA Web Design course at Wakefield College, I was elated. Using the contact form on their website, I contacted them telling them a bit about myself and my experiences and received a reply almost straight away. It turned out the course was everything I wanted to do and more, combining all of the aspects of the Multimedia course I did that I was good at and enjoyed. After meeting with the course tutor and having a chat, he offered me a place on the course and I took it without question.
For the first time, I can see where I’m going in life. The cloud has cleared, I have found my direction!
